Montreal, QC: Romance on the Rink
As we were walking to the hockey rink in LaFontaine Park today, we decided to investigate a claim made by Adam Gopnik in this year’s winter-themed Massey Lecture.
Gopnik tries to establish a connection between skating and covert sexuality, writing that “to glide is to escape the normal bonds of the body, but it also makes us body-conscious. Skating, like ballet, is a virtuous stylization of sexual poses that subliminally restates them. Skating rinks [are] places where, with impeccable motives, you can go and engage in wild flirtation and open body display.”
We’re not so sure about this. Listen to our not-very-rigorous analysis here.
